Meet Emily Guo, This Week's Whiz Kid

Emily is a fourth-grader at State Bridge Crossing.

Wednesday's Whiz Kid: Emily Guo Grade: 4th School: State Bridge Crossing Elementary Accomplishments: Emily Guo is a very active student at State Bridge Crossing. Recently, Emily placed first place in the Fulton County Technology Fair in the category of 3-D modeling. Her project went on to the state competition.  She also is an enthusiastic writer. Emily’s writing piece won first place for fourth grade at State Bridge’s Young Author’s Competition. In Emily’s spare time, she plays the piano, and in her latest piano competition earned first place for an alternate position.   Each week Patch highlights a great kid in our community. Math Champions

Eleven students from State Bridge Crossing Elementary participated in the Georgia Perimeter College Elementary Math Tournament recenlty and won the overall school competition. The third grade team of Roy Kim, Jordan Di and Catherine Chen won first place; the fourth grade team of Nithilan Vincent, Victoria Chen, Pranav Iyer and Kevin Kim won first place, and the fifth grade team of Charlie Overton, Nadia Dowlatkah, Andrew Wu and Emily Wang won second place.    Individual trophies were won by:

Meet Manasa Bhatta, This Week's Whiz Kid

Manasa is a junior at Chattahoochee High School.

Wednesday's Whiz Kid: Manasa Bhatta Grade: 11 School: Chattahoochee High School Accomplishments: Manasa Bhatta was recently selected as a regional finalist in the Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Competition, the nation’s premier public health research competition for high school students.  This April 15-18 she was in Washington D.C. to present her research to public health experts and compete for scholarships. Manasa researched the effects of marianismo – beliefs held by some traditionalist Hispanic women emphasizing sexual purity – and if these beliefs could be an unexplored reason why Hispanic women have higher rates of cervical cancer as these women may avoid pap smear screenings. Wednesday's Whiz Kid: Benjamin Eyer Grade: 1st School: State Bridge Crossing Elementary Accomplishments: According to Benjamin’s first-grade teacher Karen Overmyer, “[The 7-year-old] is enthusiastic about learning and enjoys reading challenging books and learning advanced math. He is also interested in science and social studies. He shows initiative and always has a positive attitude. Benjamin is an exemplary student who always follows directions and listens. He is a Cub Scout and likes to earn belt loops and pins. He likes to play with his brother, Christopher, and his friends. Each week Patch highlights a great kid in our community. Meet Samantha Showfety, This Week's Whiz Kid

Samantha is a third-grader at State Bridge Crossing.

Wednesday's Whiz Kid: Samantha Showfety Grade: 3rd School: State Bridge Crossing Elementary Accomplishments: Samantha is in Casie Markwell's third-grade classroom. Her favorite subject is language arts and she enjoys reading mystery books. Samantha is a member of a year-round swimming team and plays soccer in the fall.  In addition to Samantha's academic and recreational accomplishments, she won first place for third grade at the State Reflection Contest. Meet Youngsoo Bae, This Week's Whiz Kid

Youngsoo is a first-grader at State Bridge Crossing.

Wednesday's Whiz Kid: Youngsoo Bae Grade: 1st School: State Bridge Crossing Elementary Accomplishments: Leslie Williams, an ESOL teacher at State Bridge Crossing Elementary School, nominated Youngsoo Bae as this week's Whiz Kid.  "[The 6-year-old] has this ability to light up my day by the stories he tells and the permanent smile on his face," Williams says. "He is an outstanding student who always comes to class ready to do his best. He always has factual information to share with our class on things we are studying. Alexi is a fifth-grader at State Bridge Crossing.

Wednesday's Whiz Kid: Alexi Man Age: 11 School: State Bridge Crossing Elementary Accomplishments: According to Alexi's teachers, the fifth-grader can be described as a compassionate friend, an eager learner and a talented actress. "Alexi accepts challenges enthusiastically and thrives on learning new information," her teachers say. "Not only does she excel in school, but also shines in theater while being part of multiple plays in the community. She also has talents in singing and choreography. Rachael is a first-grader at State Bridge Crossing.

Wednesday's Whiz Kid: Rachael Shuman School: State Bridge Crossing Accomplishments: According to Rachael Shuman's teacher Allison Cohen, the first-grader is "a very enthusiastic student and is passionate about everything she learns and does. Rachael is very inquisitive and always yearns to learn more.
