Eric Olsen breaks school 800-meter record.
The Johns Creek High School boys track and field team competed in the state track meet this past weekend. Clay Phillips placed sixth in the state in pole vault, while Demian Sevciuc finished third in the long jump competition, missing first place by 2 1/2 inches. Other field event contestants included Denny Victor in the discus and Sevciuc in the triple jump. The team of Matt Azemar, Andre Hinton, Johnathan Roddey, and Sevciuc ran in the 4X100 relay, while Erik Olsen broke the JCHS 800-meter record and Matt Azemar qualified for finals in the 200 meter, placing seventh in the state in that event.

On Saturday, five students from Johns Creek High School andAutrey Mill Middle School participated in the second annual Ironhorse 5K race in Athens, TN. The event was held in honor of Jaynee Holland (aunt of runner, race winner and Johns Creek High School athlete Allie Buchalski) to raise money to defeat ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), a condition that attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. This is the second year that Athens City Middle School has hosted this race to honor Mrs. Holland, their dedicated and much loved librarian for 18 years. School reaches top 10 for first time.
The Johns Creek High School girls track and field team competed in the State Championships this weekend in Albany. The highlight of the meet was standout distance runner Allie Buchalski who was state runner-up in the mile run and state champion in the two-mile. Allie smashed her own school record in the two-mile to capture Johns Creek's first individual state title in track and field. Johns Creek was also represented by Hayden Merrick, a freshman, in the discus competition. Also competing was Kaitlin Greenway who clocked the Gladiators' fastest time of the year in the 400 meter dash. The team finished in the top 10 in the state for the first time in school history. Gladiator band marched on 5th Avenue in New York City.
It was a trip filled with memories. “As I look back on this first major trip, for our 3-year-old band, the time was wonderful! The experience, participating in the 2012 New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade, was one of accomplishment, excitement, and just plain fun,” said Al Estep, Director of Bands for Johns Creek High School. The student’s accomplishments have been monumental and this year they culminated their efforts by marching in this 251-year-old parade and enjoying the many additional events. The parade route was filled with the energy of the crowd cheering the bands on as they passed by thousands of spectators, nearly eight persons deep in some areas of the parade route. The Johns Creek High School track and field team competed at the Class AAAA Sectionals on Saturday. Finishing in the top at sectionals and advancing to the girls state meet later this week are Allie Buchalski in the mile and two mile, freshman Hayden Merrick in the discus and Kaitlin Greenway in the 400 meter. Greenway's time of 58.5 seconds is the fastest time run at Johns Creek in more than two years. Girls team finishes in second place; athletes set new school records.
The Region 7-AAAA Championship Track and Field competition was held at Johns Creek High School recently with 11 schools competing in the event. The Johns Creek boys team finished as region champions and the girls team finished in second place as region runners-up. Several athletes set new school records. Records were set in the 3,200 meters by Allie Buchalski; 100 hurdles by Mariam Haidara; 110 and 300 hurdles by Will Somers; 1600 by Erik Olsen; 200 by Matt Azemar; 3,200 by Zach Schroeder; 4x100 relay team of Matt Azemar, Andre Hinton, Johnathan Roddey and Demian Sevciuc; and the 4x400 relay team of Erik Olsen, Seth Reaves, Andre Hinton and Matt Azemar. The Chattahoochee High School varsity girls lacrosse team defeated a determined Johns Creek High team 20 - 11 Thursday night to win the 3-AAAA-A Championship for the third straight year. The victory gave them the No. 1 seating in their bracket for the upcoming state playoffs and home field advantage. Hooch was led by recent NCAA signee Aubrey Bausum who scored 5 goals followed by Elicia Zarzour with 4 and Katie Trainer who had 3. Nine players scored for the Cougars who took 46 total shots against the Gladiator defense. On March 26 high schools from across the state competed in the State Economics Challenge at the Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta. The competition began with each team of four taking tests in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and International Economics/Current Events. Then, the two schools with the highest points – Johns Creek and Marist – battled for the State Title in a final round of competition done quiz-bowl style. The teams went head-to-head, buzzing in to attempt to answer the economics questions correctly. The Johns Creek High School team of Clayton Ritcher, Sudarshan Muralidhar, Alan Zhang and Jesse Zheng defeated Marist to become State Champions.
