Sign up for Spring Youth Sports at Newtown Park

Registration is open for Newtown Recreation sports programs in Johns Creek.

Young athletes in Johns Creek can register until Jan. 31 for one of several sports being offered this spring by Newtown Recreation. The athletic association’s spring programs, based at Johns Creek’s Newtown Park, feature soccer, baseball, lacrosse, tennis and girls running/training.  It also offers instructional classes in soccer and t-ball for youngsters, ages 3 and 4. Non-resident fees may apply. Some age groups may play on fields at local schools. Check Newtown Recreation for details and registration. Newtown Park is located at 3150 Old Alabama Road.

POLL: Are Kids Getting Priced Out of Sports?

A NY Times article explores the era of the $250 (or more) baseball bat.

Have you bought a baseball glove for your Little Leaguer lately? Did you pay more than $100 for it? How about a $250 bat? Or maybe $299.99? That's the online price of one model at Dick's Sporting Goods. Meanwhile, Hibbett Sports, Johns Creek Patch's Readers' Choice winner for Best Sporting Goods Store, seems to have more affordable models, with the chain's website quoting $199.99 and even $34.99. A New York Times story headlined "Big Price Tags Attached to Even the Littlest Leagues," looks at the big business of equipping youngsters for participation in youth baseball and softball leagues, quoting those costs and more.
