The Chattahoochee High School varsity wrestling team has been declared Region champions for the first time since 1997 – the same year three of the team's wrestlers were born. In a day of hard-fought wrestling Feb. 2, Chattahoochee edged out rival North Forsyth High School by one point to take the Region 6-AAAAAA Traditional Wrestling championship at North Forsyth. “Winning our region was one of the goals the team set for itself at the beginning of the season," said Head Coach Jason Hicks. "Hooch has an incredible coaching staff who dedicated themselves to preparing the team. The Chattahoochee High School varsity wrestling team finished 2012 strong, with a tournament win followed by a good finish in another tourney against some of the top teams in the Southeast. Led by seniors Mikey Cunningham, Chris Wedel, Najee Banks, Wes Rice and Matt Allman, the Cougars took first place at the Coal Mountain Classic Dec. 22. The Cougars had been trailing all day, until the finals, but the wrestlers stepped up to the challenge with Allman, Joey Reihing, Ben Geier and Sean Hoffman taking third; Rice, Brady Miller, Banks and Taylor Podhouser grabbed silver; and Wedel, Cunningham and Jordan Pitt won gold. Northview High School’s Junior Titans wrestling program has undergone massive changes, including a limitation to 50 students. Northview Wrestling Program Director Bob Biondich has overseen both the high-school wrestling program and Junior Titans, whose participants are ages 6-14, for the last five years. During this time, he has seen two broad categories of youth — those who abandon sports in favor of sedentary activities and are not athletic and single-sport specialists who play year-round and suffer injuries due to overuse of particular muscles.
