Volunteers collect recyclable materials from each classroom.
The “Green Team” at Wilson Creek Elementary volunteers every Thursday morning before the school day begins to collect recyclable materials from each classroom. Ninety fourth and fifth grade students take turns each week rolling large recycling bins down the halls, visiting each classroom and office in the school to collect tons of paper, aluminum, cardboard, baggies, file folders, index cards, newspapers and magazines to be recycled. The “Green Team” is sponsored by Wilson Creek parents Kim Collins and Betsy Skalet, as well as fifth grade teacher Cindy Dumont. The school participates in a single stream recycling program which allows all recyclable materials to be collected in one container without the need to separate or sort in advance.

The Battle of the Books is a fun reading incentive program, sponsored annually by Wilson Creek’s media center. Students begin preparing for the competition in the fall, tackling a list of eight books representing a wide range of genres. Students were required to read at least six of the eight books to participate, but many of the participants read the entire list of eight books - a total of 2,175 pages. At the event, a moderator reads out questions related to the content of the eight books: a direct quote taken from a …

Wilson Creek students recently visited with Ronald McDonald as part of a character education campaign, entitled “Giving Back with Ronald McDonald.” The program emphasizes how anyone, regardless of age, can help others and their community by utilizing their time, talents and natural gifts. It addresses two pillars of good character: Caring and Citizenship. Through magic, music and puppetry, kids are led to understand the positive impact they can have by serving, recycling, treating others with respect, and sharing their individual abilities and resources. In his warm, fun way, Ronald helps kids understand the meaning of “empathy.” The theme of “Giving Back” reminds children to have compassion for others, which in turn minimizes …

Wilson Creek Elementary celebrated the 100th day of school on Jan. 20. Kindergarten students began the day with a visit from caped crusader “Zero the Hero” (a.k.a. third-grade teacher Serena Austin). Zero especially loves the 100th day of school because it has TWO zeroes! Students asked many questions of Zero, including: How old are you? What is your favorite number? How much do you weigh? How many days in a century? Zero quickly answered all their questions with a confident “100!” Wendy One, Zero the Hero’s helper, put together goody bags and the children enjoyed treats shaped like 0s and 1s (pixie sticks, life-savers and donut holes). During the 100th day celebration, students also made 100 Day crowns which they all wore proudly to …
