Community Gives Thanks by Helping Locals in Need

Hundreds of turkeys and other food items were handed out for Thanksgiving by North Fulton Community Charities volunteers.

As a result of the community’s generosity, 780 families and 150 seniors were provided food, gift cards, turkeys, and pumpkin bread by North Fulton Community Charities just in time for Thanksgiving.  Over 400 volunteers helped to collect, sort, fill and distribute the food items.  Families began lining up in the early morning hours the night before at the distribution site. Smiles, sore backs, tired eyes and thankful tears were all part of the special service event. “We are so blessed to live in a community that recognizes and responds to the needs of those less fortunate. During his Presidency, Ronald Reagan said ‘We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone.’ There are a lot of people NFCC sees everyday living in North Fulton …

Take Steps to Prevent Thanksgiving Cooking Fires

State Farm partners with William Shatner to urge safety when frying a moister, tastier turkey.

According to State Farm claims data, more cooking fires occur on Thanksgiving than any other day of the year. In fact, grease and cooking-related claims more than double on Thanksgiving Day compared to an average day in November. With the popularity of turkey frying, people are at risk for fryer related fires and injuries. U.S. fire departments are responding to more than 1,000 fires each year in which a deep fryer is involved. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says deep fryer fires result in more than $15 million in property damage each year and hot oil splatter can cause serious burns to an adult or life threatening injuries to a child. In 2011, State Farm teamed up with William Shatner to produce a short video dramatizing …

Wilson Creek Students are Thankful

Wilson Creek Elementary students in Debra Fujimoto’s kindergarten class have enjoyed learning about the significance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Students have learned why and how we celebrate Thanksgiving and how President Lincoln turned it into an official holiday. They also studied the pilgrims and their friend Squanto, who helped them learn how to survive in the New World.  On Friday, Nov. 16, students performed a Thanksgiving musical for their parents before enjoying a traditional Thanksgiving feast of turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, cranberries and pumpkin pie in the cafeteria.

Cooking With Carol

Cornbread Dressing for Thanksgiving

Bring some homemade cornbread dressing to your Thanksgiving table this year.

One of the things that Johns Creek resident Janet Kelley and her husband Tom enjoy doing together is preparing their traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Kelley, an accomplished cook, does most of the cooking at their house, but at Thanksgiving the couple divides the labor and both work on the big meal.  The few days before Thanksgiving are filled with lots of busyness and subsequent good smells coming from the Kelleys' kitchen. One of their favorite things to prepare is this homemade dressing based on a recipe from Janet’s mom. One good thing about it is that it can be made a couple of days ahead of time and refrigerated until it’s time to cook it on Thanksgiving Day. The Kelleys have lived in the same house in Johns Creek for the past 22 …
