Will You Join the Black Friday Fray?

When do you do your holiday shopping?

Every year there is an increased drive to get shoppers into stores. Black Friday now gets an early start on Thanksgiving Thursday, Buy Local campaigns push Small Business Saturday shopping and technology and social media sites encourage Cyber Monday logins. The message is clear - shop early and shop often. So what is your shopping style for the holidays? Will you be shopping off your Thanksgiving meal on Thursday or Friday, supporting the small businesses in your area on Saturday or is the computer your preferred shopping mall on Cyber Monday? There are, of course, the traditional procrastinators, too. Are you one of those shoppers found at the local drug store just before closing time on Christmas Eve? Last week, we asked you what you …

Divisive is you, Bill Bryan, bringing the five together outside of normal and legal council meetings! Who elected you Mayor? No one. You keep stating that we elected you to watch our tax dollars. That is not the reason we elected you, and your radical, tea party view of "taxes" is not representative of your typical constituent. We elected you to represent OUR interests, not YOUR negative and …   more ›

Cancer Patients Have Chance for Free Cleaning Service

Swallowtail Green Cleaning joins with non-profit to clean homes for women with cancer.

A Johns Creek cleaning service has partnered with an international non-profit to offer free maid services for those afflicted with cancer. Cancer affects millions each year. Women undergoing treatment for cancer have no energy to clean their own homes. Their immune systems are compromised and they are often sensitive to scents. Scents of toxic chemicals like bleach and other scents of harsh cleaning products can make a negative difference in their day to day health issues. Johns Creek-based Swallowtail Green Cleaning realized this and partnered with Cleaning for a Reason to give their time, energy and resources to clean the homes of women with cancer completely for free. Patients who live in Johns Creek, Roswell, Alpharetta, Milton, Duluth…

Lemon Drop Shoppe Opens in Johns Creek

Goal: boutique-quality goods at lower prices.

The Alpharetta boutique Lemon Drop Shoppe has just opened a second store in Johns Creek. “It’s a lifestyle boutique,” said David Wolfe of Cumming, owner of the Alpharetta and Johns Creek stores. “We carry a myriad of products — clothing, jewelry, home décor items, gourmet food, gourmet drinks, skin care.” Wolfe opened the Alpharetta location in October and opened the Johns Creek store in early November. When asked how the Lemon Drop Shoppe began, he said he already owned First Team Georgia Realty and wanted to provide his clients with additional services. He decided to set up the Lemon Drop Shoppe in May, looking for vendors and researching other boutiques. He wanted to create a store that had the high quality of a boutique but at …

Business Brings Fresh Veggies to Your Door

Her love of fresh produce lead Genna Bowman to venture out and begin her own business delivering farm-picked food to Johns Creek.

Genna Bowman likes to know where her fruits and vegetables come from. Sifting through the choices in nearby Peachtree Corners grocery stores she didn't like what she saw. Food shipped in from far away states and even other countries. Bowman, an admitted "veggie lover," thought there had to be fresh fruit and vegetables that were grown nearby that were available. She began looking for surrounding Georgia farms for organically grown produce. You could say a seed was planted as she searched for fresh produce to serve to her family. That search grew into a new business venture she calls Farmers Delivery. The business is a farmers market on wheels of sorts. Bowman reasoned that most everyone, given the choice, would prefer fresh produce, but …

Dancing Goat Needs Support to Stay Open

Volunteer “casting call” planned to avert Johns Creek theater shutdown.

Performing Arts North is hoping to avert the closing of the Dancing Goat Theatre by holding a “casting call” for volunteers and new board members. “We took a risk opening when we did,” said Margarita Moldovan, Performing Arts North executive director and artistic director. “All the other theaters were closing at the time. It’s a hard economy for something like this.” Ticket sales are not funding the theater’s operations. Moldovan said they planned for classes and camps to help pay the bills as well, but those have not made up the difference. It costs $4,500 per month to run the Dancing Goat Theatre and monthly revenues are approximately $2,000. Performing Arts North has been running a deficit for the last six to seven months, with the gap …

'Days of Giving' Honors Performing Arts North

Johns Creek group receives $1,000 grant.

Performing Arts North of Johns Creek was recently honored with a $1,000 Days of Giving donation as the Wells Fargo program will exceed $1 million in grants to groups across Georgia this fall, since its beginning four years ago. Receiving a check for the group was Margarita Moldavan. In all, 62 groups received $1,000 each at a community breakfast at Founders Hall in Roswell. Three additional breakfasts are occurring across Atlanta this fall and 251 groups in all will receive the same gift. Wells Fargo also announced that it is encouraging all the groups honored – and others – to take part in Georgia Gives Day. That is a statewide campaign to encourage people  throughout Georgia to support nonprofits, climaxing in a 24-hour statewide giving …

Patch Partners Supports Small Businesses

AOL Chairman and CEO Tim Armstrong gives advice to small business owners via Patch Partners.

There are at least 2,000 businesses in Johns Creek, according to 2007 statistics. Some of them may be places you and your family frequent, businesses that have been in Johns Creek for as long as you can remember. And some may be your go-to places instead of national chains. AOL Chairman and CEO Tim Armstrong may stand behind a global brand, but he believes in the power of small businesses. In his recent interview with Patch Partners, a website connecting business owners to Patch in local communities, he offered his insight into what can set a small business above the rest of the competition. Small businesses can hold a lot of power if they are intuitive with their customer base, Armstrong said. “Small businesses can be nimble and can have …
