Hundreds of North Fulton residents converged on Johns Creek for the start of a month of activities for the 50+ crowd.
Mayors from Johns Creek, Roswell, Alpharetta and Milton helped kick off the North Fulton Golden Games this morning at Newtown Park, May 1, as hundreds of residents got ready for the first day of competition. After the colors were presented, the Star Spangled Banner was sung and the torch was lit, it was time for some friendly competition between the mayors. Once that was over, the North Fulton residents aged 50 and older walked as a parade to the first day's event, which were field events. Competition will continue at venues across the five cities of North Fulton. Sandy Springs is the other city. Zumba, a popular fitness routine that combines Latin and other music with easy-to-follow dance moves, is a popular and effective calorie-burning workout. Yoga can improve flexibility, muscle tone, strength and help with stress management. The yoga course, which accommodates all fitness levels, covers stretches, poses, and relaxation techniques. You can honor your military family members and friends for their service and sacrifice with engraved red-brick pavers for the Johns Creek Veterans Memorial Walk at Newtown Park in Johns Creek. The pavers will be installed as part of a contemplative walking path accentuated with black granite memorials for each major conflict dating from World War I. The entrance plaza will feature a brick sitting wall and flags for each branch of service. A gazebo will rest in the midst of the memorial. Groundbreaking for the project is tentatively set for the Fourth of the July with the opening of the Veterans Memorial Walk anticipated for Veterans Day 2014. The playgrounds will close starting April 3 for the installation of new equipment.
The playgrounds at Newtown Park in Johns Creek will be closed for about two weeks starting April 3 as the city installs new playground equipment and features. According to a news release from the City of Johns Creek, the two new playgrounds will be separate but adjacent, and age-specific, with one for children up to 8 years old and the other for those 9 to 14 The younger playground will have a castle theme with classics such as swings, rockers, see-saw and a structure with interconnected platforms, ladders, steps and slide. Last weekend's cancelled hunt will not be rescheduled.
The city of Johns Creek will not reschedule Newtown Park's Easter Egg hunt. The Sunday, March 24, hunt was cancelled last weekend due to rain. Citing more predicted bad weather and scheduling conflicts, the city said in a statement sent to e-newsletter subscribers, "We are sorry that we aren't able to bring this popular event to our community this year, but keep your baskets handy for next Easter when thousands of eggs will be waiting for eager Johns Creek youngsters!" Johns Creek is looking for competitors 50 years old or older to represent the city in the 19th annual North Fulton Golden Games, an Olympics-style series of games, May 1-23. Registration ends April 19. The month-long competition, which starts May 1, includes sports such as swimming, track and field, and even rock-climbing. It also includes a middle range of athletics, such as bowling, washer toss, horseshoes, shuffleboard and basketball free throws. The Golden Games offers low-impact activities such as billiards, bridge, poker and bocce ball. CURE Childhood Cancer announces the 5th annual Sam Robb Memorial 5K and Fun Run, which will be held in Newtown Park in Johns Creek on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 8 a.m. The race honors Sam Robb, the son of Sam and Annamarie Robb of Roswell, an athlete who lost his battle with osteosarcoma at the age of 20 in 2007. Event proceeds benefit The Sam Robb Fund of CURE Childhood Cancer. Young athletes in Johns Creek can register until Jan. 31 for one of several sports being offered this spring by Newtown Recreation. The athletic association’s spring programs, based at Johns Creek’s Newtown Park, feature soccer, baseball, lacrosse, tennis and girls running/training. It also offers instructional classes in soccer and t-ball for youngsters, ages 3 and 4. Non-resident fees may apply. Some age groups may play on fields at local schools.
