Tutoring Group Reaches Out to Younger Peers

High school students tutor and mentor their middle-school cohorts.

Johns Creek High grads Sudarshan Muralidhar and Alan Zhang may be headed off to college, but they still want to make sure the student-run 121Reach gets off to a good start this year. Founded several years ago by Chattahoochee High School students, the tutoring program has expanded to Northview and Johns Creek. Muralidhar and Zhang helped start the Johns Creek branch last year, and serve as co-presidents. They explain that the program pairs more than 100 high-schoolers from Chattahoochee, Northview and Johns Creek with middle-schoolers from Taylor Road, River Trail and Autrey Mill, respectively. Local Students Win Social Innovation Contest

National challenge, presented by AT&T, showcases students’ innovative responses to societal issue.

At Washington D.C.'s George Washington University, Junior Achievement USA® (JA) selected team “Rain Drain,” a group of teen entrepreneurs from Atlanta and Los Angeles, as winners of the JA Social Innovation Intensive, presented by AT&T. The team included students from Northview and Milton high schools. Rain Drain was selected from 15 competing student teams comprised of 75 high school students representing JA operations from across the country. The Intensive was one track making up the JA National Student Leadership Summit, which took place from July 30 through Aug. 3 in the nation’s capital. City Council Honors Student Artist

Chattahoochee junior Caitlyn Woodhead wins Congressional Art Competition.

The Johns Creek City Council this week recognized Caitlyn Woodhead, a rising junior at Chattahoochee High School, for winning the 2012 Congressional Art Competition for District 6. Beginning June 25, Caitlyn's work will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol Building along with the other winning entries. Caitlyn has taken classes at the Johns Creek Community Arts Center since sixth grade, and will take AP Drawing at Chattahoochee.

Johns Creek Kid Accepted to Flight Camp

Brecken Yeo will attend EAA Young Eagles Camp in Wisconsin.

The Experimental Aircraft Association had announced that Brecken Yeo of Johns Creek has been accepted to attend the EAA Young Eagles Camp 2012 in Oshkosh, WI. Brecken is a 5th-grader at Lake Windward Elementary in Alpharetta.  The EAA Air Academy offers young people the opportunity to meet and work with aviation professionals, while living and learning the arts, sciences and lore of aviation in both classroom and workshop settings.  They join many other young people, ages 12-13, in this aviation program.  Participants in the EAA Air Academy come from around the United States and several foreign countries.
