Team makes it to state championship for first time in school's history.
Northview High School's Mock Trial Team has reason to celebrate. It recently made it to the State Championship for the first time in the school's history, placing second in Georgia. The following students earned awards: In addition to awards given by the judges, teams at state can give an award to their favorite performer. The following Northview students earned awards as outstanding performers from other teams: Student attorneys on the team include Erin Smith, Shreya Ganeshan, Harris Gu, Alisha Goel, Patrick Wu and Hayden Cox. Student actors who portrayed witnesses include Madeline Evans, Aya Badr, Sehar Ali, Bryant Anthony, Harsha Sridhar and Amber Scales. Student timekeepers include Bianca Lall and Brandon Scales. Matt Thomas, orchestra teacher, was named River Trail Middle School Teacher of the Year. In his fourth year at RTMS, Thomas teaches orchestra, guitar and general music. Under his tutelage, the orchestra has been recognized through a performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City as well as awarded high standard performer every year at the Southern Star Music Festival. His guitar class is one of only three such classes offered in Georgia, making his program particularly unique. In addition to his RTMS duties, Thomas directs the Fulton County Fiddle Team, which provides students with enhanced performance opportunities that are not typically part of their daily orchestra program. Chattahoochee High School’s Alec Rubin has signed a National Letter of Intent to play football at Reinhardt University in Waleksa. Rubin, a three-year letterman in football and a wide receiver and quarterback for the past four years, started as a Junior Cougar player and went on to mentor younger players in Cougar to Cougar. A member of Chattahoochee's undefeated 2010 State Championship football team, he helped the team come in first in the Region in 2011 and make it to playoffs in 2012.

Wilson Creek Elementary School in Johns Creek recently honored Sara White as the school's Teacher Representative of the Year and Alicia Harrington as the School Professional of the Year. White, a third-grade teacher, was one of two teachers nominated by staff for the award. White has 13 years of experience as a teacher. Harrington, a kindergarten instructional paraprofessional, has worked in education for 12 years.

Chattahoochee, Johns Creek and Northview each receive $1,400 in AP teacher training grants.
Johns Creek's three high schools — Chattahoochee, Johns Creek and Northview — have each recently received $1,400 in AP Teacher Training Grant awards. The schools were among 14 in Fulton to receive almost $18,000 overall, according to a press release from Fulton County Schools, for the training at 2013 Advanced Placement Summer Institutes, which provide teachers with the support needed to teach the courses. Alpharetta, Banneker, Cambridge, Centennial, Langston Hughes, North Springs, Riverwood and Westlake high schools also each received $1,400; while Creekside, Milton and Roswell high schools each received $800. Northview High School's Titans Fencing concluded a successful 2012-13 season in the Georgia High School Fencing League. In Saturday’s team tournament at Pope High School, Northview men and women’s teams both brought home trophies. Northview’s men’s team of Dave Williams (Captain), Harold Liu, Pedrum Khoshlesan and Matthew Do secured a berth in the championship round by defeating Johns Creek High School by one touch, 43-42. In the hard-fought championship bout, a strong Pope High School men’s team of Jake Wachtel (Captain), Luben Jelezarov, Ian Lenthart and Nick Shook beat the resilient Northview squad 45-37 to win the championship trophy. Findley Oaks Elementary School is one step closer to taking a giant leap in achievement for all of its students. The school’s PTA recently presented Principal Lacey Andrews with a check for $10,000 to use toward the purchase and set up of a leveled library. A leveled library consists of small sets of fiction and nonfiction books that teachers use in providing small-group instruction across the curriculum. Instead of a “one size fits all” approach, a leveled library gives teachers access to differentiated resources that help meet the needs of students at all levels of learning. More than half of Fulton County’s high schools – including Chattahoochee, Johns Creek and Northview high schools in Johns Creek – have been named “AP Honor Schools” and leaders in offering students the most challenging curricula available. The College Board, the organization in charge of Advanced Placement and the SAT, on Wednesday named 13 Fulton high schools to its annual list of high-performing high schools.
