Board Votes for Closure of Fulton Science Academy High School

The public charter school's own board can request a hearing to be held Dec. 18, but the ultimate decision on the charter rests with the Georgia Department of Education.

CORRECTION: Through an editor's error, the original headline on this article named the school incorrectly. Fulton Science Academy High is the charter school affected, as the story stated. The Fulton County Board of Education today, Dec. 11, approved a recommendation to start the process to close Fulton Science Academy High School at the end of the school year. Superintendent Robert Avossa first made the recommendation to terminate the school's charter at a school board work session on Dec. 4. Avossa based his recommendation on what staff reports call "a history of insufficient governance capacity and poor decision-making on the part of the school’s governance board." An independent audit released to the school board on Dec. 4 was said to …

Spreading the Influence

What is your effect on society? It's a question that takes a lifetime to answer.

The guy that owns my favorite cigar shop in Johns Creek has a great “man cave” in the back; a room decorated with overstuffed leather chairs surrounded by a tasteful collection of art to enhance the cigar smoker motif – and a killer big screen TV. A few of us, his loyal clients, congregate from time to time to burn a few leaves and sort out the concerns of the day.  Yesterday we were discussing the passing of Mike Wallace and Dick Clark.  Someone mentioned that old adage that celebrities and other noteworthy people always pass in groups of three. I mentioned Levon Helms, drummer for The Band, who died Thursday. “And he’s the third,” I said. The words had barely cleared the rings of cigar smoke wafting through the room when we turned up the…

Centennial Student Helps Support Other North Fulton High Schoolers in Need

Drew Erickson, president of Young Men's Service League, Northeast Atlanta Chapter, led fellow members in a clothing drive to support in-need students at six North Fulton County schools.

Local Centennial High School student, Drew Erickson, has a passion for helping others and his efforts to collect clothing, of all things, haven't gone unnoticed. In fact, Erickson's work is quite important to high school students at six North Fulton schools who otherwise wouldn't have the clothing they need for school and daily life because of family hardship. Erickson, president of the Young Men's Service League, Northeast Atlanta Chapter (YMSL), founded "Students Helping Students," during 2009 when he was only a freshmen in high school. The group began collecting and distibuting clothing to students locally. Now a junior, Erickson has banded together with some of his fellow YMSL members to hold seven clothing drives. In total, the group …

King's Ridge Holds Off Mt. Pisgah to Win in Overtime, 20-14

The Tigers scored the first two TDs, but allowed the Patriots to come back for a tie.

A key interception in the end zone late in regulation preserved a tie for the King's Ridge Christian Tigers, who were celebrating homecoming in a regional battle against the Mt. Pisgah Patriots. That allowed the home team to take a 20-14 win in overtime. The Tigers scored first in a game marred by penalties. At least one touchdown and several long runs off sweeps or pass receptions were called back because of penalties. Mt. Pisgah Head Coach Doug Dixon said many of his players made great plays, but the defense kept the team in the game. King's Ridge Head Coach Jeff Pickren said it was a game with many key plays, but perhaps the most important was the interception Jason Mccoy made in the end zone as Mt. Pisgah was threatening to score, …
