Update: We apologize for the technical difficulties we experienced Friday night and this morning, but the scoreboard is complete now. The matchups for the Georgia Dome next week are Walton vs. Grayson, AAAAA; Lovejoy vs. Tucker, AAAA; Burke County vs. Peach County, AAA; Calhoun vs. Buford, AA; and Savannah Christian vs. Landmark Christian, A. The defending champion Cougars were eliminated from the playoffs with a 20-6 loss in the second round.
The defending Georgia High School Association Class AAAA state champion Chattahoochee Cougars saw their season end in their second round playoff matchup against the Warner Robins Demons with a 20-6 loss on Friday. The Cougars (10-2), who were not able to get their offense in gear, were unable to control the Demons' potent ground game. The first quarter was a see-saw affair, but Warner Robins managed to score twice in the second period. First, on a 66-yard run by running back Dede Wright and then on a 43-yard pass from quarterback Ty Odom to wide receiver Akeem Taylor. The extra point attempt on the first touchdown was no good. Both teams host first-round games in the Georgia High School Association playoffs.
It’s playoff time in Johns Creek next week, with Chattahoochee and Johns Creek high schools both hosting first-round games in the Class AAAA football tournament. Chattahoochee and Johns Creek finished 1-2 in Region 7-AAAA and will host teams from 8-AAAA. Chattahoochee, the defending state champ, has Habersham Central, 8-AAAA’s fourth-place team. The Cougars, which beat Rome 21-14 Friday to secure the 7-AAAA title, are 9-1 overall. Johns Creek, also 9-1, beat Forsyth Central 44-14 Friday and will play Flowery Branch in the first round. Flowery Branch is the No. 3 seed from 8-AAAA. You can find the complete football playoff brackets on the Georgia High School Association website.
