Flu Patients Continue to Fill Doctors' Offices

A North Fulton physician said 15 to 20 percent of his day is spent with flu patients.

This flu season is different than previous years because of the sheer volume of people who are getting sick, according to a North Fulton ambulatory medicine physician. Dr. Richard Ellin, who works at Kaiser Permanente Alpharetta Medical Offices, said in the past two or three years, he'd see the occasional flu patient, maybe one or two a week. "This year, we are seeing anywhere from three to six a day and that's just me," Dr. Ellin said. "Fifteen to 20 percent of my day is the flu or complications from the flu. With National Influenza Vaccination Week, which started last Sunday and ends Saturday, health officials aim to increase that percentage, especially since this year's season may be a bad one. Time to Get That Flu Shot

Health officials say two new strains of influenza are circulating during this flu season. Vaccination is recommended for everyone older than six months.

Okay, so you didn't get sick with the flu last year. Good for you. Don't get cocky. That's the message from both federal and local health officials as this year's influenza season gets underway. Though last year's flu season was the mildest on record, two new strains have appeared this year. According to the Centers for Disease Control, influenza cases are off to a slow start so there is still plenty of time to get a shot. Though young children and the elderly are most at risk, the CDC recommends that everyone six months or older get a flu shot. WellStreet Urgent Care is among the facilities in Johns Creek offering flu vaccinations. A shot costs $12 (a $25 value) and no appointments are necessary. Flu shots are also available at Walgreens …
