“What was life like when you went to 5th grade?” That is the question being asked by fifth-grade media center classes at Findley Oaks Elementary School in Johns Creek. Students are culminating weeks of research by Skyping with “Living History Representatives” from around the country. Each class was assigned two decades — spanning from the 1920s to the 1990s — to research in connection with their ongoing social studies curriculum. Working with Amy Rubin, media specialist, students used a wide range of online and print resources to become experts on their assigned decades. Findley Oaks Elementary School is one step closer to taking a giant leap in achievement for all of its students. The school’s PTA recently presented Principal Lacey Andrews with a check for $10,000 to use toward the purchase and set up of a leveled library. A leveled library consists of small sets of fiction and nonfiction books that teachers use in providing small-group instruction across the curriculum. Instead of a “one size fits all” approach, a leveled library gives teachers access to differentiated resources that help meet the needs of students at all levels of learning. Findley Oaks’ leveled library will focus in particular on supporting the goals outlined in the Common Core, which is a set of rigorous standards adopted by Georgia …

Kindergarten students at Findley Oaks Elementary School recently culminated their study of book characters with a parade of pumpkin heads. Students worked with their classroom teachers and the media specialist to learn about different elements of a story, including main character. Afterwards, students each selected a favorite book to read with their family. They identified the main character in their books, then decorated a pumpkin to look like the character. They also completed a mini-report with details about the character and what they liked about the character. The parade of pumpkin heads was displayed in the media center, with corresponding books, for the whole school to enjoy.
