Autrey Mill Middle School Supports Brain Tumor Awareness

The entire seventh grade class wore gray on May 8.

Seventh grade students at Autrey Mill Middle School wore gray early in May to commemorate Brain Tumor Awareness month. The campaign highlights "gray matters." Teachers and students participated in the special day, May 8, to show support for a seventh grade student who has had to fight the illness. Community Invited to Meet with Former NYC Schools Chancellor Thursday

A roundtable discussion will take place at Autrey Mill Middle School, Thursday, May 9.

Fulton County Schools Superintendent Robert Avossa will meet with the former Chancellor of New York City Schools Joel Klein at Autrey Mill Middle School in Johns Creek tomorrow. Klein is the current CEO of Amplify, a company dedicated to reimagining K-12 education by creating digital products and services that empower teachers, students and parents in new ways, according to Fulton County Schools. The local school system began a program using Amplify in four middle schools this spring which utilize tech devices, including tablet computers preloaded with educational content that expand upon the students' curriculum. Fulton Schools Superintendent Cooks Meal for Students at Autrey Mill

Dr. Robert Avossa recently stopped by to visit with the school's cooking club.

Autrey Mill Middle School’s Cooks’ Club had a guest chef in the kitchen this week when Superintendent of Fulton County Schools Dr. Robert Avossa stopped by to cook with the club.  Avossa shared a family recipe for spaghetti and spicy fish sauce. As he prepared the dish, he also shared stories of his Italian heritage and infused the session with tips for cooking to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The students prepared a salad bar and freshly squeezed vegetable/fruit juice to complement the spaghetti. As a testament to Avossa’s cooking, not a strand of spaghetti was left in the pot, say school leaders. Autrey Mill Kid Gives Blankets to Johns Creek Fire Department

Collin Knezevich's Beta Club project helps local children.

Collin Knezevich, an eighth-grader at Autrey Mill Middle School, donated six handmade fleece blankets to the Johns Creek Fire Department on April 1 in hopes of helping local children who may be injured or displaced by fire or other types of emergencies in Johns Creek. Knezevich met with Johns Creek Fire Chief Jeff Hogan at the department’s headquarters to deliver the blankets, which he made as part of a Junior Beta Club project. Knezevich spent more than a dozen hours making the brightly colored blankets.  “This is something we will definitely use,” Hogan said. “We appreciate Collin’s hard work on this project and the generous donation to the Johns Creek Fire Department.”

Autrey Mill Journalism Program Gets a Boost

Johns Creek Foundation gives money to school for new media equipment.

The Johns Creek Foundation Board of Directors recently approved a grant application to Autrey Mill Middle School PTA for the school's fledgling video journalism program.  The school's program is an often-requested class by students and has begun to fill to capacity. The idea of the program began when Amy Creamer, Autrey Mill Middle School drama teacher, took over the morning news show. Autrey Mill Middle Hosts Multicultural Night

The 10th annual Multicultural Night was held at Autrey Mill Middle School. The purpose of this event was to celebrate the cultural diversity of the school and promote cultural understanding.  Some 20 countries were represented with displays of photographs, maps and artifacts distinct to that culture, and foods unique to that country were shared and enjoyed by all.  A program of varied musical entertainment from each of the countries followed that included dance and instrumental performances. Full costumed performers impressed the crowd of more than 350 family and community members. Twenty-six origami cranes were on display in honor of the 26 Sandy Hook Elementary victims. The cranes were made by sixth-grade student Ryo Sato.

Autrey Mill Students Compete at Tech Fairs

Alexandra Jimenez places first in Georgia Tech competition.

Members of Sharon McGee's Computer Club from Autrey Mill Middle School recently participated in the 2012 Scratch Competition that was held by the Institute of Computing Education at Georgia Tech. Alexandra Jimenez, an Autrey Mill seventh-grader placed first in the Middle School Individual Game Competition.  The focus this year has been on introducing programming using Scratch. The club will also be attending the Fulton County Technology Fair Competition in January.   Other AMMS participants were Aurian Fassih, Adar Horowitz and Krister Erickson. The Scratch Awards Ceremony was held on Nov. 18.   "This is the student's first time at programming and they are doing a tremendous job so far," McGee said.

Autrey Mill Middle Students are Chefs for a Day

The students of Autrey Mill Middle School’s Cooks’ Club recently got a chance to work with the chefs of Publix’s Cooking School under the guidance of Chef Michael Maliska. The students prepared a three-course meal, learned good kitchen safety and cooking techniques, and then got to enjoy the fruits of their labor. The Cooks’ Club meets once a month at AMMS under the guidance of Chef Carlin Breinig and her assistant Chef Vicki Kuerer, who donate their time to teach students healthy alternatives to their favorite, sometimes "not-so-healthy" meals, snacks and desserts.  The club sponsors are Nathalie Bernstein, Danielle Chereck, Jaimal Page,and Maria Purwin. Autrey Mill Middle is 'Wooing Wed Widing Hood'

Drama program presenting play on Nov. 17.

The Drama Department at Autrey Mill Middle School has put together a comedic gem with its upcoming fall play, “Wooing Wed Widing Hood” by Charlie Lovett. Under the leadership of Director Amy Creamer, the talented cast and crew of  6th, 7th and 8thgraders have mounted a visually spectacular and fast-paced romp that will be sure to please audiences of all ages.   The play will be performed for the public on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. on the AMMS stage. The school is located at 4110 Old Alabama Road in Johns Creek.  Tickets can be purchased at the door or before school the week of Nov. 12.  Student tickets cost $5 and adult tickets cost $8.  All proceeds go to the after-school drama program. “Wooing Wed Widing Hood” tells the story of the …
