UPDATE: Il Divo Brings Excitement to Crowd, Not ASO

The quartet performed a blend of pop and musical theater tunes in their concert at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre. But they didn't use the ASO's musical talents, just their bodies.

UPDATE Aug. 16: While I'm awaiting confirmation, it appears that the ASO was playing music for this concert, but nobody else heard it. ArtsAtl.com reports that the muscians were told at rehearsal that Il Divo would have a recording of another orchestra piped through the amphitheater sound system. ************ Il Divo performed its 100th show for an appreciative audience in Alpharetta on Sunday night, as approximately 7,000 audience members listened to the classical crossover quartet, backed by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. This was the second Simon Cowell "creation" at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre this month. Kelly Clarkson was in town on Aug. 8 with The Fray. The American Idol had to face Cowell as one of the judges on that show's …

Classical Mystery Tour Comes to Verizon

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra performed with the group that brings back the sounds of The Beatles at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Alpharetta.

We'll never see The Beatles perform together again, as only Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are still alive. So Saturday night's performance by the Classical Mystery Tour with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Alpharetta is as close as we can get. The four members of the group do their best to sound just like the members of the iconic band. It's not the same, but it is very entertaining. They are able to provide renditions of many Beatles classics that sound very good, especially with the backing of a full orchestra. Many Beatles tunes make use of instruments other than the guitar, bass, keyboards and drums, so the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra played a big role in the evening. Conductor Martin Herman is a key …

ASO Show Celebrates the Fourth at Verizon

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra presented its All-American Celebration in Alpharetta at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre on Independence Day.

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra continued its summer season in Alpharetta on Wednesday night with what has become a tradition over the past five years with a July 4th concert. The U.S. Army Chorus lent their voices to the show, amping up the patriotic fervor when singing appropriate tunes to the concert's theme. I worried that the sound setup wouldn't be up to the task when it was at times hard to hear them over the music from the orchestra on the opening number, The Star-Spangled Banner. It could have been that I was seated at a table on the floor in the lower seating area, and the combination of being so close to the musicians and hearing them over the speakers amped up the sound. So those people in the upper seating areas might have had …

Jackie Evancho Helps ASO Open Its Summer Season

The pre-teen classical singer performed with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Alpharetta.

I learned something valuable about myself at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra summer season opening concert at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre Sunday. My patience runs out after 2 hours. The concert, with classicial singer Jackie Evancho joining the orchestra, and newcomer Josh Page as well. I think. But two songs into the concert, it was always the same thing. Ms. Evancho, now 12-years-old, was discovered by most of the United States through the America's Got Talent TV show competition. On Sunday night, she performed many of the songs from her CD, "Dream With Me," plus other songs which showcased her talent. It's incredible that such a young, tiny performer can have such a big voice, and that was clearly on display when she was on stage at …

You express poignantly why the Evancho team has tried very hard to discourage amature photography at her concerts. There's no explaining the behavior of some, I guess. But I wish everyone could read your review.   more ›
