Alpharetta Closing GA 400 Lanes, Ramp Today

The Department of Public Safety's traffic investigators will recreate last week's fatal accident to determine its cause.

Expect big delays on GA 400 northbound near Haynes Bridge Road today, April 19 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. as Alpharetta traffic crash investigators try to determine exactly what happened in an April 11 fatal accident. The Alpharetta Department of Public Safety closing two northbound lanes of GA 400 from the Haynes Bridge entrance ramp onto GA 400, extending north toward Old Milton Parkway, according to George Gordon, spokesman for the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety. More than the GA 400 lanes will be closed. As the accident began on the northbound entrance ramp from Haynes Bridge, investigators will close the ramp also. "All motorists will experience traffic volume delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes of travel," Gordon said…

Westside Parkway Opens Next Monday

The first "official" use of the roadway after a ribbon cutting will be a parade of vehicles past the ceremony area from the southern end north to Webb Bridge Road.

Finally. Westside Parkway's last section will open on Monday, April 23, after a 3 p.m. ribbon-cutting. "We think this is going to be a big impact to trafifc on Highway 9 and on Haynes Bridge Road," said Brandon Beach, president of the Greatern North Fulton Chamber of Commerce and executive director of the North Fulton Community Improvement District. Beach was speaking to the Windward Rotary Club on Monday, April 16 at its meeting in the Atlanta Marriott Alpharetta. It took an extra four years as Prospect Park went bankrupt before it was even built, dragging the four-lane road into limbo with it. But once North American Properties bought the property, right of way for the part of Westside that was a piece of the Prospect Park land was …

Expect Last Section of Westside Parkway to Open in April

C.W. Matthews, the contractor picked by Alpharetta, started work on Monday to complete the last section of the road.

Alpharetta officials say the last section of Westside Parkway should be opened in April as long as this weather holds. Mayor David Belle Isle said crews will work 24/7 in some cases on the section between Old Milton Parkway and Webb Bridge Road. The final connection of Westside provides an arterial corridor along GA and should provide some traffic relief.  Pete Sewczwicz, director of Engineering/Public Works for Alpharetta, explained what C.W. Matthews will be doing as the road contractor. The City Council awarded the $1.65 million contract on March 19. For about 85 percent of the road, he said they will mill the existing asphalt to make sure there are no issues under the road after it was poured years ago by Thomas Enterprises …

Alpharetta Police Investigate Storm-Related Fatality

An elderly woman apparently crawled into a drain pipe in fear of the storm.

Alpharetta police are investigating a storm-related fatality from Friday night's severe weather. Patricia Barnette, 83, was found dead in a creek near her home, having apparently first climbed into a drain pipe in fear of the storm. Late in the evening at the height of the severe weather hitting the city, the Alpharetta 911 center took a call from a man saying his elderly wife was missing. The last contact the husband had with his wife is when she told her husband she was going to take shelter in a closet due to the weather, according to George Gordon, spokesman for the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety. Alpharetta police officers responded to the scene and began to search the area. At the same time, Alpharetta dispatchers contacted …

North Fulton Community Charities held the ribbon cutting ceremony for their new Education Center on Wednesday. The center - which will be used for everything from education classes to job training - is staffed by over 70 volunteers. NFCC began using the building in February and has already held more than 50 classes for 175 Fulton County residents. Prior to opening the new center, the NFCC Thrift store was being used to hold education classes. But thanks to generous donations from the Roswell, Alpharetta and Johns Creek communities, the new Education Center will operate across the street from the thrift store now.
