Week Ahead: Free Movie and Art Classes, Polar Bear Splash and More

Monday, Dec. 30: Free Movie Matinee - the Park Place classroom is transformed into a mini-theater for a showing of "Silver Linings Playbook." (2012, rated R). Fresh popcorn and drinks will be served. To reserve your seat, please RSVP by emailing ParkPlace@JohnsCreekGA.gov or call 678-512-3430.

Wednesday, Jan. 1: Lake Lanier Polar Bear Jump - SPLASH into 2014 by taking a plunge in Lake Lanier and supporting an Olympic legacy program for our local youth. Compete for a number of prizes including best costume, biggest splash, oldest and youngest jumpers, and best sponsored group jump. Prizes will also be awarded for the chili cook-off, which is free to enter.

Friday, Jan. 3: Safety and Self-Defense Class for GirlsJohns Creek Police Department is offering teenaged girls the free class to teach situational awareness and self-defense. For girls 13 to 20 years old, the class is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Space is limited. To sign up, email Sgt. Kalish at debra.kalish@JohnsCreekGA.gov and you will receive a confirmation email.

Saturday, Jan. 4: Free Art Lessons at Ocee Library - Free art lessons for ages 7 to 16 taught every 1st and 3rd Saturday from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. through April at Ocee Library. (The art room is located in the kids' book section.) Students can learn watercolor, color pencil, pastel and more.

Saturday, Jan. 4: Magic Treehouse Auditions - Off Broadway Children's Theatre will hold auditions for its Winter Production Of Magic Treehouse's Classic, "Dinosaurs Before Dark." Auditions are open to ages 5-14, candidates must prepare 18 bars of a musical theatre selection to sing and dress in comfortable clothes to learn a short dance.
