North Fulton Community Charities Relies on 'Stamp Out Hunger' Donations

North Fulton residents can participate by leaving out a bag of non-perishable food items by their mailboxes on Saturday, May 11.

The National Association of Letter Carriers' 21st annual "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive is coming up and North Fulton residents who participate will be making a big difference locally, say North Fulton Community Charities leaders.

Letter carriers will collect non-perishable donations as they deliver mail along their postal routes on Saturday, May 11. The campaign is the nation's largest single-day food drive and North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC) is the local recipient.

"Every year the number of families that come to NFCC increases in the summer months by five percent to 10 percent," said NFCC Food Pantry Coordinator Kevin Tracy. "During the summer our usual sources of food collections - schools, faith communities, businesses, civic groups - are either not in session or they experience decreased attendance so they don’t hold food drives. So at the same time that the need for food increases, our food collections decrease."

The NFCC Food Pantry relies heavily on donations, especially as the summer months approach.

The Pantry will see an increase in families requesting food because children - who would ordinarily receive a free or reduced lunch at school - are out of school for the summer. According to Tracy, many of those same families are not able to afford day care, babysitting or summer camp so a parent often needs to stay home to care for the children. And that means many families have to give up wage earning opportunities, creating a financial emergency that lands them on the doorstep of NFCC.

"The timing of Stamp Out Hunger is perfect," said Tracy.

The letter carrier collections "have brought over 20 tons of food to our food pantry, which enables us to take better care of the families that come to us in the summer months," he added.

Last year, NFCC received 27.8 tons of food from the drive. It was the organization's largest event donation in its history.

The local charity is asking all local residents to support the Stamp Out Hunger campaign.

To participate:

  • leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods near your mailbox on May 11. The postal carrier will collect these items on their route.
