'Last Summer on Earth' Brings 90s Hits to Town

Four 90s bands – Cracker, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Blues Traveler and Barenaked Ladies – cranked it up at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre Monday night.

You might think the 90s were all grunge and flannel. But you’ve just forgotten about those lazy Sunday afternoons with a beer in your hand and Blues Traveler on the CD player. Or the time you took a road trip across two states to see a Barenaked Ladies concert.

With complaints about the July heat and humidity, some concertgoers might have wished it were in fact the last summer like this one. But when the music was cranking, they seemed to forget about the weather, as Blues Traveler and Barenaked Ladies easily competed for the headline act. Blues Traveler revived such favorites as “Run-Around” and “Hook” from "Four," the album that made them famous. They were also joined onstage by Ed Robertson of Barenaked Ladies for a cover of Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer.”

By the time Barenaked Ladies appeared after dark, the crowd was ready for both old songs like “The Old Apartment” and new ones like “Boomerang.” And of course, they made up a song on the spot. Lead singer Robertson told the crowd that the band had spent their day off at Six Flags Over Georgia, and they broke into song about one of the rides, using the chorus from R.E.M.’s “Superman.”
