Best Wines For Summer in Johns Creek

By Dana Leigh Smith

Nothing is more refreshing than a cold glass of wine on a hot summer day, but with so many bottles to choose from, it can be hard to determine which one is best.

While all warm-weather wines should be crisp, cool and refreshing, selecting the perfect variety for you really depends on what it’s going to be paired with, explains Carolyn Evans Hammond, vino expert and author of the best-selling book Good, Better, Best Wines.

Hammond reveals this summer’s tastiest wine pairings for everything from a smoky barbecue to a formal sit-down dinner. The best part is that all the bottles are $8 or less, which is definitely something to raise a glass to!

Sparkling wine is sensational for summer because it’s naturally refreshing and swings easily from cocktail alternative to aperitif to food wine, says Hammond. Full of apple and fresh ripe pear flavors, this Spumante pairs well with potato chips, smoked fish or goat cheese salad. Serve it at a picnic or brunch.

2012 Cavit Collection Pinot Grigio, Delle Venezie IGT: light-bodied, 12% alcohol, Italy, $8

This must-try vino exudes a breezy wildflower aroma before seducing the senses with lemon-lime and pink grapefruit flavors. It pairs fabulously with chicken, Caesar salad, fish, and seafood dishes. Bring this crowd-pleaser to a neighborhood barbecue or potluck.

2012 Jacob’s Creek Riesling: medium-bodied, 13% alcohol, South Eastern Australia, $8

Ripping across the palate with juicy lime and green apple flavors, this tart yet balanced wine pairs well with summer fare that packs a punch—such as spicy grilled shrimp, hot chorizo or jerk chicken. Try it at a dinner party.

2011 Turning Leaf Pinot Noir: medium-bodied, 12.5% alcohol, California, $6

This delicious wine offers an excellent value for the price, says Hammond. Its muted ripe cranberry and clean strawberry flavors go well with grilled salmon, sausages or pork chops. Drink it at your next family dinner.
