Pisgah Girls Upset No. 3 Pace

Boys still lead standings despite first loss.

In a battle of top-ranked tennis teams, the No. 5 ranked Mount Pisgah Christian School girls upset No. 3 ranked Pace 5-0 on Wednesday. The win improved the Lady Patriots' record to 6-0 on the season.

The squad is being led by two freshmen, Aryn Greene and Samantha Russell, and a sophomore, Taylor Carlson. The dominant trio has not dropped a set this year in singles competition.

Greene, playing No. 1 singles, is 4-0 and has won 48 of the 51 games that made up the four matches. Russell, No. 2 singles, is 6-0 on the season and has only dropped two games all year (68-2). Carlson is also 6-0 overall and has won 68 of the 76 games she has played in this season.

The doubles teams of Nicole Peters and Cissy Jamieson and Carlota Tarrago and Katherine Wilkison have also been solid for Pisgah.

"I thought we would have a pretty strong girls team this year since we advanced to the quarterfinals of the state tournament last year. But there were unanswered questions coming into this season that you always have when you are counting on freshmen,” said head coach Ken Bomar. “I'd have to say it's a very pleasant surprise that they're undefeated at this point in the season, since they are usually playing against girls that are two or three years older. None of our girls have lost a match so far this season and there is a lot of friendly competition to avoid being the first to lose an individual match."

The No. 3 ranked boy’s team was upset on Wednesday by No. 4 Pace. It was the Patriots (5-1) first loss of the season.

Against Pace, Sam Edwards won Pisgah’s only match 6-2, 6-2. The boys still lead the standings for Region 5E-A.

"We have several returning players on our boys team which advanced to second round of the state tournament last year so they know what it takes to be successful. We've added a couple of strong freshmen this spring, including Sam Edwards at number one singles, who have made important contributions.  I've experimented with a number of different lineups in the first half of the season looking for what clicks and it's becoming clear as to what works and what does not. As we move into the second half of the season I believe our team has the attitude and work ethic that it will take to continue to be successful," Bomar said.

Both teams host Pinecrest on Tuesday, March 8, in a Region 5E-A matchup. The matches will begin at 4 p.m. at the Country Club of Roswell.
