Pisgah Girls Tennis Captures Region Title

Lady Patriots defeat No. 3 Pace Academy 3-0 on Wednesday to capture the Region 5-A championship.

The Mount Pisgah Christian School girl’s tennis team easily defeated No. 3 Pace Academy 3-0 on Wednesday to capture the Region 5-A championship. This is the second consecutive region title for the No. 1 ranked Patriots.

"Winning the region tournament for the second straight year is an indication of the progress we have made in building a tennis program that can compete on both the region and state level," said head coach Ken Bomar. "Even though we depend on a number of freshmen and sophomores, they are a very focused team. This title is especially satisfying due to the fact that we were missing perhaps our strongest player, Aryn Greene, who was competing in a national tournament this week in California.”

Pisgah easily won all three singles matches against Pace. Samantha Russell won at the No. 1 singles position (6-0, 6-1), Taylor Carlson captured No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-0) and Blanca Tarrago clinched the match at No. 3 singles (6-3, 6-3). The doubles matches were stopped when Pisgah captured the third point, clinching the victory.

The Patriots will begin state tournament play next week and will be at home in the first round. The opponent and date of the match are still to be determined.

“Our girls set a number of goals at the beginning of the season and they have worked very hard throughout the season to reach them," Bomar said. "We look forward to competing in the state tournament next week and see how we stack up against the best teams from across the state."

In the region tournament, the girls team advanced to the championship match with wins over Galloway (3-0) and No. 6 Providence (3-0).

The Pisgah boys team did not fare as well, losing a tough opening round match against Atlanta International. The Patriots lost 3-2 after singles players Jonathan Villwock and Isaac Hram retired with injuries. The team finished the season 9-4 and ranked No. 5 in the coaches poll.
