Lady Cougars Take Care of Business in First Round Of State Lacrosse Tourney

The Chattahoochee girls lacrosse team knocks out Decatur, 20-4.

Chattahoochee attacker Carolyn Whalen scored 5 and midfielder Aubrey Bausum scored 4 to help the Lady Cougars roll past Decatur 20-4 in the first round of the GHSA Class A-AAAA State Tournament Wednesday night.

"We started off pretty slow, but we really started to pick it up and worked as a team.  Our stick skills improved a lot over the course of the game," Whalen said.  "We worked really hard, so we're just going to practice harder and hopefully come out with a win against Woodward on Saturday."

Whalen said the team's greatest asset is the fact that she and her teammates never  quit.  "Our best asset, I think, is that we never give up.  We've come from behind a lot, and that helps us a lot." she said.

Fortunately for the Lady Cougars, they didn't have to come from behind in this game.  Instead, Chattahoochee jumped out to an early lead.  Alexis Nesserload put the Lady Cougars on the scoreboard first.  Then Bausum scored the first of her four goals shortly after and Chattahoochee had an early 2-0 lead.

Decatur's Audrey Leonard scored to cut the lead to 2-1, but the Lady Bulldogs wouldn't score again until late in the first half.  Whalen scored the next two goals and the Lady Cougars went up 4-1 with 14:36 left in the first half.

The rest of the first half was all Chattahoochee.  The Lady Cougars outscored Decatur 7-1 and went into halftime with an 11-2 lead.  In the second half, Chattahoochee simply picked up where they left off.  Bausum scored to open the second half and Nesserload assisted on the goal.

After that, Chattahoochee reeled off five unanswered goals before Decatur midfielder Summer Fowler scored with just under eight minutes left in the game, making the score 17-3 Chattahoochee.

The Lady Cougars scored three more goals to finish out the match and a 20-4 first round win.

In addition to Whalen's five goals and Bausum's four, the Lady Cougars got production from midfielder Katie Trainer's three goals.  Kim Barco, Hailey Lindley and Nesserload each had two goals, and both Haley Keith and Madison Rudnick each had one goal.

Chattahoochee improves to 9-6 on the season and advances to the second round of the state tournament.  The Lady Cougars will host Woodward Academy Saturday afternoon at 2:30.  Decatur finishes its season with a record of 6-10.
