Chattahoochee Girls Lacrosse Advances to Semis with 12-11 Win

Lady Cougars hold off late Woodward comeback.

Chattahoochee attacker Katie Trainer scored the game-winning goal to propel the Lady Cougars lacrosse team to the semifinals of the GHSA Class A-AAAA girls state tournament with a 12-11 win. It was the fifth of Trainer's five goals, but none more important.

"We did really well on offense.  We had great transition on the ball.  It was just a good game," Trainer said.

However, Woodward was poised to do what Chattahoochee has done all year – come from behind and win. In the second half, Chattahoochee had an 11-6 lead when the Lady Eagles scored five unanswered goals to tie the game at 11.

Then with 1:49 to go in the game, Woodward was called for a foul in the Cougars' offensive zone.  Trainer took the penalty shot and scored to give the Lady Cougars the lead and eventually, the 12-11 win.

"I'm super excited right now.  I don't know what to say.  We worked really well as a team," Chattahoochee attacker Carolyn Whalen said.

"We got down a little bit in the second half, but we really picked it up again.  We refused to lose, and I'm really glad that we won.  We're not done with the season," Trainer added.

In addition to Trainer's five goals, attacker Aubrey Bausum also chipped in four goals on the day.  Hailey Lindley scored two goals, and both Kim Barco and Whalen each had one goal.

The Lady Eagles were led by midfielder Drew Jackson with five goals on the afternoon. Attacker Avery McGregor scored three goals. Lizzy Taylor had two, and Rachel Lovinger scored one goal to round out the scoring for Woodward.

Chattahoochee (10-6) advances to the semifinals on Wednesday and will host the winner of the South Forsyth-Holy Innocents match.

"It's a big win for us.  We get to keep home-field advantage," Chattahoochee Head coach Jack McIlvain said.  "Our girls played tough the whole game.  We were up, but we let them back in it.  We have a veteran team.  We held tight, and we scored late in the game."
