Brookwood Ends Northview's Soccer Season With 3-1 Win

The Northview boys soccer team fell to Brookwood 3-1 Wednesday in the first round of the boys Class AAAAA state soccer tournament.

Thanks to goals from Trevor Mooney, Scott Eidson and Adrian Alabi, the Brookwood Broncos ended Northview's season, beating the Titans 3-1 in the first round of the boys Class AAAAA state soccer tournament.

The Broncos jumped on the scoreboard early when Mooney scored just a few minutes into the match to give Brookwood a 1-0 lead. Both teams had several chances to score throughout the game.

For Northview, forward Felipe Valenzuela took a shot in the first half that went over the crossbar.  Midfielder Jordan Greenburg had an opportunity to even the score on a free kick, but his long attempt went right into the hands of Brookwood goalkeeper Matt Mayer.

One of Northview's best chances to equalize came in the second half on a corner kick.  Steve Marion sent the ball into the box.  Kyle Rice took a shot, but the ball was cleared off the line by a Brookwood defender.

The Broncos had numerous chances in the game to add to their lead.  Senior midfielder Chris Peterson sent a shot across the goal mouth that was grabbed by Northview goalkeeper Matt Petrillo. Petrillo came up with some big saves in the game, including blocking a close shot on goal from Brookwood forward Alabi.

In the second half, Brookwood added to its lead when Chris Peterson crossed the ball to Eidson, who put it in the back of the net to give the Broncos a 2-0 lead with 28:28 left in the game.

However, Northview's hard work was finally rewarded.  With 15:47 left to play, Northview midfielder Jordan Greenburg took the ball toward the goal line, fed teammate Steve Marion the ball, and Marion beat Matt Mayer near post to cut Brookwood's lead to 2-1.

However, this would be the Broncos' night as Alabi scored on a header off a throw in, sealing the 3-1 victory for Brookwood.

"I told our team that Northview, coming back from a runner up finish last year, losing to Collins Hill on penalty kicks, that they were one kick away from being state champions.  You can't overlook them just because they are a No. 3 seed and we are No. 2," Brookwood head coach Daniel Klinect said. "We went over in practice what we thought was the best way to break them down defensively.  We were able to capitalize with an attacking center midrun.  That's how we scored our first goal.  Defensively, we need to fix some things.  We didn't do everything we had hoped to do."

Northview ends its season at 8-8-1.  Brookwood, now 15-3 on the season, advances to the second round and will play the winner of Lassiter and North Gwinnett next Wednesday.
