Qualifying Today for Atlanta Tennis Championships

Week long ATP Tour event draws top ranked tennis stars from around the world.

In today's qualifying matches, its Nicolas Massu from Chili versus Rajeev Ram from the U.S. in the stadium court followed by two USA players Austin Smith and Denis Kudla. Americans Tim Smyczek and Gabriel Townes will be the final matches to play on the stadium court.

The line up for Court 1 is Olivier Sajous (HAI) vs Wil Spencer (USA) followed by Phillip Simmonds (USA) vs. Greg Jones (AUS) then Marinko Matosevic (AUS) will face Mac Styslinger (USA).

Court 2 players are Matthew Ebden (AUS) vs Daniel Kosakowski (USA) followed by Yuichi Sugita (JPN) vs Haydn Lewis (BAR).

In Saturday’s qualifying matches, Athens Olympic gold medal winner Nicholas Massu fought back to win after dropping the first set to local favorite and Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Kevin King, of Peachtree City. However, Georgia Bulldog Wil Spencer split sets with the qualifying draw eighth seed Nick Lindahl before the Aussie retired before the start of the third set.

Two Atlanta residents prevailed in the qualifying with Austin Smith downing Nathaniel Schnugg 6-3, 7-5. Gabriel Townes moved into the second round with a straight-set victory over Eric Graves 7-5, 6-1.

First round play begins Monday no later than 4 p.m. The ATC winner receives $96,800. The tournament includes No. 9 ranked Mardy Fish who may begin play as early as Tuesday and John Isner, a former UGA Bulldog and finalist last year, could face 21st seed James Blake in the second round.
