What Does 'Back to School' Mean to You?

Johns Creek students have lots of options for school, which will you choose?

As August draws near, many families are preparing for the start of school. Fulton County starts school Aug. 15 while Gwinnett County starts the school year a week earlier on Aug. 8.

For some families, the start of the school year does not mean the start at the same school as last year. Familys can choose from several options, including private school, homeschool and charter schools.

In our household, the school year means that the oldest child starts school on Aug. 8 at an online public school. She will be home with access to a teacher online when needed. We chose this option for her not for religious reasons, as many homeschoolers do, but because of her intelligence level being a full two grades ahead.

Our second will start the school year in a half-day private program for kindergarten. For her, the choice was driven by age. With a July birthday, the year in half day will keep her close to home as she will be one of the younger ones in the class. Each year, we evaluate the children and decide where and what they will be learning.

What school choice have you made this year? Are you changing from the previous year, or are you sticking with what worked for you last year? If you are homeschooling, why?
