Pisgah Tennis Wins Thrilling Area Final

The Mount Pisgah Christian School varsity girls tennis team won its fourth consecutive Area/Region championship on Wednesday with a dramatic 3-2 win over Darlington.

“It was a Cinderella story that could have been a Hollywood script like "Rudy" or "Hoosiers." It was an honest-to-goodness feel-good story that still continues,” said Head Coach Ken Bomar. 

The Lady Patriots got off to a strong start with Cissy Jamieson and Nicole Peters quickly disposing of Darlington's No. 1 doubles 6-0, 6-4. Just minutes later Ines Tarrago won her No. 2 singles match 6-2, 6-1. Then the tide began to shift.

Blanca Tarrago was beaten at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-1, and Sarah Chapdelaine lost at 3 singles by a score of 6-4, 6-1.

It all came down to the 2 doubles team of Alex Brady and Gigi Large. Pisgah won the first set 6-4 and the second set went back and forth and finally ended up in a tie-break. Brady and Large had three match points but could not close it out and lost the second set 7-6.

In the third and deciding set Pisgah was down 2-4, but the duo fought back, tying the score and forcing another tie-break. Once again they fell behind in the tie-break but managed to come back to tie it at 5-5. After winning the next point to go up 6-5 Large hammered a strong groundstroke which was not returned.

“Teammates raced onto the court and everyone laughed and cried at the same time,” said Bomar. “It was a fitting end for our seniors, who can now lay claim to the fact that they have won the Region championship all four years at Mount Pisgah's Upper School.

The Patriots now move into the state tournament as one of four No. 1 seeds (one from each Area tournament) and will host the number 4 seed team from Area 2 next week.
