Pisgah's Playoff Run Ends

Patriots were competing in GHSA state hoops championship for first time.

The boys basketball team lost to No. 10 Aquinas 60-56 on Wednesday night, ending the Patriots' playoff run. Rondy Brownlee and Quarte Sapp each scored 10 points to lead Pisgah (20-10). Brain Ginty, Joseph Marco and Ben Miller each scored 8 points.

The game was close throughout, with the score tied at 12 at the end of the first quarter. Marco opened the scoring in the second quarter with a pair of free throws and a three-pointer to give the Patriots a five-point lead. Aquinas then went on a 6-0 run, but threes by Marco and Ben Miller put Pisgah back in the lead. The Patriots led 25-24 at the half.

Pisgah built a six point lead in the third quarter on a Ginty three and two field goals by Sapp. But the Fighting Irish battled back again cutting the Patriot lead to 42-41 at the end of the third quarter.

The Patriots went cold from the field in the fourth quarter, managing only one field goal – a layup by Ginty. The rest of Pisgah’s 12 points in the quarter came from the free throw line. In a foul marred quarter Aquinas hit 11-of-13 free throws and added baskets by Willie Callaway, Ahmed Hill and Ray Thompkins to take the lead and then seal the game.

This ended the best boys basketball season for Pisgah in the GHSA era. (The Patriots won the 2006 GISA state championship and began competing in GHSA in the fall of 2006.) The team won their first ever region championship and qualified for the GHSA playoffs for the first time.
