Northview Mock Trial Wins Region Competition

Team will head to state championship March 17-18.

The mock trial team competed this year for the seventh time in the Georgia High School Mock Trial Competition. During the past six years, NHS has placed as a region runner-up five times, but has come short of the region title. This year, the team dethroned perennial region champ Decatur High School and won the Region 7 championship. The team will go on to face the other top 18 teams in the state at the State Championship in Lawrenceville March on 17-18.

The team boasted nine individual team member awards at the region championship. Rohan Lall (’12) won two Outstanding Attorney awards, and Amber Scales (’15) and Madeline Evans (’13) won two Outstanding Witness awards apiece. In addition, Bryant Anthony (’13) won an Outstanding Witness award and Leanne Harb (’12) and Alisha Goel (’13) each won an Outstanding Attorney award.

In addition to faculty support, the team has three community attorney coaches: Paul Dietrick, Jennifer Green and Jim Stewart. These coaches give up two afternoons a week (and a great deal more time the week of the competition) to rehearse with the team and offer feedback. This year, attorney coach Paul Dietrick was presented with the State Bar of Georgia’s Outstanding Attorney Coach award at the regional competition; this was recognition for the fast rise of our young team, which has produced collegiate mock trial award winners at UGA, Georgia Tech, Cornell, and the University of South Carolina (to name a few).
