NFCC Needs USB Flash Drives for Students

High school students must have USB "keys," but some families don't have money for any supplies.

It's coming down to the wire for school supply donations for North Fulton Community Charities Back to School Health and Wellness Fair, but the charitable organization is way short of one key school supply.

Eden Purdy, program director at NFCC, said only 25 USB flash memory drives have been donated, and they need 200 more.

With Fulton County Schools opening to students on Monday, Aug. 15 to start the school year, children are gearing up for returning back to the classroom. For some parents, this can cause tremendous stress and one more added expense in an already stretched budget. NFCC tries to reduce this financial burden and make sure low-income and disadvantaged children start school with the supplies they need to succeed academically.

The Back to School Health and Wellness Fair will be Saturday, Aug. 13, providing approximately 1,500 students in grades K-12 with brand new backpacks filled with school supplies.

Donations of new backpacks, school supplies and financial donations are wanted and can be brought to NFCC by Friday, Aug. 12. But the big need is for the USB flash drives.

A quick check online showed 4GB USB flash drives costing as low as $6.99 at , and selling for $8-$10 at many office supply stores–though for $10 some 8GB drives are available. Many of these sales end on Aug. 13.

In 2010, NFCC provided 1,488 children with new backpacks. With the ongoing economic recession, NFCC sees an average of 100 families a day struggling to make ends meet.
