Johns Creek Student Chosen for Naval Seminar

John Stastny will get a unique look at the U.S. Naval Academy this summer.

Johns Creek High junior John Stastny will spend six days this summer learning about seamanship, navigation, information technology, oceanography and more.

Stastny is among a group of some 2,550 students from around the country and internationally who have been invited to attend the U.S. Naval Academy's (USNA) Summer Seminar program.

"John has wanted to attend a service academy since the sixth grade," his father, Jordan, told Patch. "For my wife Cynthia and I, it's nice to see all that hard work and effort pay off. It's a step in the right direction."

According to a USNA press release, the program is a "fast-paced leadership experience for rising seniors in high school . . . [that] helps educate, motivate and prepare selected students who are considering applying for admission to USNA."

Students in the program will attend a six-day session where they will live in Bancroft Hall, eat in King Hall and participate in academic and leadership workshops and daily physical training, experiencing first-hand what the Naval Academy offers.

Students like Stastny will cover subjects from information technology, naval architecture and mechanical engineering, to oceanography, mathematics, history and meteorology as well as participate in seamanship and navigation classes. They will even get to take a cruise aboard a Navy Yard Patrol Craft. The seminar is led by Naval Academy Midshipmen and active-duty Navy and Marine Corps officers.

Founded in 1845, the U.S. Naval Academy is a four-year college that prepares midshipmen morally, mentally and physically for naval service.
