Johns Creek Middle Schools Soar in Writing Assessment

Pass rate for Grade 8 writing assessment is 91 percent in Fulton.

Johns Creek students are excelling on state assessments as evidenced by recent results on the Grade 8 Writing Assessment, with 95 percent of Autrey Mill, River Trail and Taylor Road middle school students exceeding standards.

And with 91 percent of all students meeting or exceeding standards for 2011, Fulton County schools as a whole are four percentage points higher than the metro area average and nine percentage points higher than the state.

“We have seen significant improvement over the past five years. In 2007, our scores were around 80 percent but have climbed to 91 percent,” said Superintendent Cindy Loe. “This achievement shows that our students and teachers have been working really hard to master the new language arts curriculum and improve their skills.”

Twenty-two of Fulton’s 23 middle schools have more than 80 percent of their students meeting or exceeding standards. Seven schools also have more than 95 percent of their students in this category: Autrey Mill, River Trail and Taylor Road in Johns Creek, as well as Fulton Science Academy, Haynes Bridge, Northwestern and Webb Bridge.

Thirteen middle schools showed impressive gains over the previous year’s scores. Three schools – Holcomb Bridge, McNair and Sandy Springs – saw increases of 10 percent or more of students meeting or exceeding standards, while five schools have more than 20 percent of their students exceeding standards:  Autrey Mill, Fulton Science Academy, Northwestern, River Trail and Webb Bridge. Five schools also showed gains in the percent of students exceeding standards:  Amana Academy, Elkins Pointe, Fulton Science Academy, Hapeville Charter and River Trail.

As a part of the statewide testing program, the Grade 8 Writing Assessment was administered in January and required students to write a composition on an assigned topic. The annual assessment provides eighth graders with a measurement of their writing performance. This information can help students, parents and teachers understand areas where students may need to focus their efforts to improve writing skills before taking the writing portion of the Georgia High School Graduation Test in their junior year.
