Humane Society Sponsoring Art & Essay Contest

Be Kind to Animals Week inspires community involvement for children and teenagers.

Be Kind to Animals Week, established in 1915 by Dr. William O. Stillman, leader of American Humane Society at that time, was created to help animals and publicize the success of humane societies. From May 6-12, animal welfare organizations across the country will promote education on the humane treatment of animals and work to instill these values in children.

“This special week is dedicated to recognize the special role animals play in our lives,” states William Shaheen, president, Atlanta Humane Society. “Our goal is to educate adults and children on the importance of humane treatment of animals and encourage children to learn to love animals at an early age.”

To honor Mariel Hannah, an 18-year old animal lover tragically killed in a 2006 home invasion, a fund established by friends and family recognizes selfless acts by teenagers who share Mariel’s love for animals. The Mariel Hannah Humane Heroes Award accepts nominations of teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 who performed an extraordinary act of kindness to benefit animals. A 200-word (maximum) essay outlining why they should win the award can be submitted by March 31. The winner will receive a cash prize and plaque.

Winners of both the art contest and essay nomination will be announced at the “Be Kind to Animals Week” Awards ceremony on May 6 at the Atlanta Contemporary Arts Center.

“These two community-oriented initiatives honor two individuals that truly had a passion for animals,” Shaheen concludes. “Each year, we remember them and recognize the impact their lives had on animals as well as how they are still impacting lives today as their legacy continues.”
