Fulton Schools Adopt Calendar for Next Two Years

Calendars adopted for 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 school years.

The Fulton County School Board has adopted calendars for the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 school years.

Highlights of the calendars, which were approved in a unanimous vote during a school board meeting, include a short break in October as well as a full-week break in November at the Thanksgiving holiday. Both also include a two-week holiday break in late December/early January as well as a weeklong spring break in April

“We asked the community for their input, and parents and school staff expressed a desire to have a more traditional calendar with well-timed breaks that invigorate students and teachers,” said Superintendent Robert Avossa. “We also heard requests to have our major breaks align with those in neighboring school districts.”

Community input also indicated an interest in returning to a 180-day calendar. For the past several years, the calendar was trimmed to 177 days as a cost-saving measure. The approved 2013-2014 calendar continues at 177 days but the 2014-2015 calendar includes 178 school days for students. For future calendars, the district anticipates adding one school day a year until it returns to a 180-day school year.

More than 1,300 comments were received in an online survey that asked respondents for feedback on how the school calendar could be drafted to positively impact student achievement. Input also was sought through the Superintendent’s Parent Council, the Teacher Advisory Council, and the Student Advisory Council. School board members also solicited feedback at their October community meetings.
