Findley Oaks Students Explore History

“What was life like when you went to 5th grade?” That is the question being asked by fifth-grade media center classes at Findley Oaks Elementary School in Johns Creek. Students are culminating weeks of research by Skyping with  “Living History Representatives” from around the country. Each class was assigned two decades — spanning from the 1920s to the 1990s — to research in connection with their ongoing social studies curriculum.

Working with Amy Rubin, media specialist, students used a wide range of online and print resources to become experts on their assigned decades. Now they get to meet people who were in fifth grade during the actual decade. In each Skype session, students ask the “Living History Representative” questions that give a glimpse into daily life in the decade, as well as expand upon national and world events that were occurring as the time.
