Barnwell Puts the 'Wow' in Science

Barnwell Elementary's first annual Science Day featured special scientific investigations with the goal of inspiring every student. The presentations included special “WOW” demonstrations from presenters in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

Students also participated in teacher guided experiments while rotating throughout the school building. The Science Day was sponsored by the Barnwell PTA, who in cooperation with the administration and teachers, set a goal of expanding innovative enrichment. Additionally, they hope to help students to see the possibilities available in the field of science.

The Science Day activities provided real-world experiences that included flight experiments.

“Science Day was cool because we got to break the rules and throw paper airplanes down the hallway to test how far they would fly,” said third-grade student Rowan Holcombe.

Conducting D.N.A. research on strawberries was also a favorite activity for many students. Sam McDonald, a fifth-grade student, said, “The best part of Science Day was the strawberry DNA experiment. It was cool to see real DNA.”
