Autrey Mill Middle Students are Chefs for a Day

The students of Autrey Mill Middle School’s Cooks’ Club recently got a chance to work with the chefs of Publix’s Cooking School under the guidance of Chef Michael Maliska. The students prepared a three-course meal, learned good kitchen safety and cooking techniques, and then got to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

The Cooks’ Club meets once a month at AMMS under the guidance of Chef Carlin Breinig and her assistant Chef Vicki Kuerer, who donate their time to teach students healthy alternatives to their favorite, sometimes "not-so-healthy" meals, snacks and desserts.

The club sponsors are Nathalie Bernstein, Danielle Chereck, Jaimal Page, and Maria Purwin. The program is part of First Lady Micelle Obama’s initiative, “Chefs Move to School,” which is a program designed to teach healthy eating habits to youngsters with the hopes that if developed early, these healthy habits will evolve into healthy lifestyles.
