Army Major, Hooch Grad Presents Flag to Team

Former Chattahoochee athlete presents flag he carried in Afghanistan.

Army Maj. Graham White, a 1996 graduate of Chattahoochee High School, presented a flag to Head Coach Terry Crowder during pre-game ceremonies Sept. 28. White, a former member of the Hooch football, soccer, wrestling and rifle teams, had recently carried the flag while on a special operations mission in Afghanistan when he was the commander of the 75th Ranger Regiment Reconnaissance Company. Joining in the ceremony were some of White's former coaches, including coaches from the evening's opposing team, Johns Creek High School, Mike Cloy, Bill Waters, Norb Terza, Joey Matthews and Wade Alexander.

At the end of his senior football season, White was selected as the AAAA First Team All State Punter for the state of Georgia, chosen as the Offensive Player of the Year for Football, and inducted into the Chattahoochee Athletic Hall of Fame. While still in high school, Graham volunteered and served as an airborne infantry soldier in the Georgia Army National Guard.

Upon graduation, White entered The United States Military Academy at West Point. There he played Army football and was involved in four Army-Navy games. As a nationally ranked punter, White was selected to represent West Point in the annual Blue-Gray Football Classic in Montgomery, Ala., in 1999. He continues to hold several Army football punting records.

Upon graduation from West Point in 2000, he was commissioned into the United States Army, where he has spent the last 12 years in airborne, conventional infantry and ranger units. Beginning in 2002, White has been on a total of 10 combat deployments, commanding either Army ranger or infantry units. Three of these deployments were to Iraq and seven were to Afghanistan. So far, Major White has served a total of 39 months in combat.

A recipient of the Bronze Star for Valor and the Purple Heart, among other awards, White is currently assigned to The Johns Hopkins University in Washington, DC, where he is obtaining his graduate degree in International Public Policy as a Fellow for the Special Operations Command.
