Section of Big Creek Greenway Closing Tuesday

Popular Alpharetta trail will be 'split' temporarily at Rock Mill Park on Kimball Bridge Road.

As construction on the new Kimball Bridge Road vehicle bridge over Big Creek continues, a short section of the Alpharetta Big Creek Greenway where it crosses Kimball Bridge Road at the Rock Creek Park greenway access will be closed beginning Tuesday, July 26.

The Alpharetta Greenway running north from Rock Mill Park to Marconi Drive near Winward Parkway will remain open. The Greenway will also remain open south of the bridge construction project site on Kimball Bridge Road.

Signs with information on the closures will be posted at all Alpharetta Greenway parking areas.

The construction project includes the development of a passage way allowing the Alpharetta Greenway to pass underneath of Kimball Bridge Road eliminating the current crossover at the intersection of Kimball Bridge Road and the Rock Mill Park entrance.

Alpharetta's director of Engineering & Public Works, Pete Sewcwicz, said construction crews for the GA Department of Transportation should be done with the project by the middle of October. They are working on the storm sewer, curb and gutter work on the southern side of Kimball Bridge Road, he said.

Sewcwicz said motorists can expect a lane shift in the near future so the crews can finish grading and pavement operations.

He said GDOT has been asked to work continuously since the city is losing the use of part of its Big Creek Greenway. The city doesn't want the greenway closed and then see no work being done on the project. On Monday, at least 20 people were working on site, he said.
