Paving Will Close Kimball Bridge This Weekend

Bridge over Big Creek will be closed Friday night to Monday morning.

Kimball Bridge Road residents won't have to worry about cut-through traffic on the heavily traveled road this weekend. The GA Department of Transportation will be closing the bridge over Big Creek this weekend to all traffic.

GDOT crews will complete paving work necessary to shift traffic to a new bridge on Monday morning.

"The Georgia Department of Transportation will close access to the bridge on Kimball Bridge Road starting 9 o'clock Friday evening, and we will reopen the bridge by 5 a.m. Monday morning," said Pete Sewczwicz, Alpharetta's director of Engineering and Public Works.

"The purpose of this is to tie in the approaches on either end of the bridge to Kimball Bridge Road," Sewczwicz said.

Motorists will not be able to cross Big Creek on Kimball Bridge Road during the closure.

"By doing this, they are able to cut off at least two weeks to one month off of their schedule," Sewczwicz said of the GDOT project.

The city negotiated the weekend closure with GDOT to avoid on-going lane closures that would have impacted residents and commuters for several weeks, according to James Drinkard, assistant city adminstrator.

"By closing the roadway and allowing GDOT crews to work through the evening, the necessary construction work can be completed much more quickly, having a lesser impact on the community," Drinkard said.

Motorists who normally travel Kimball Bridge Road are encouraged to avoid the area if possible, as heavy delays are expected.

Once the bridge reopens, motorists will be driving over the new bridge.

"You will be on the new bridge. The plan by GDOT is, everyone will be on the new bridge then," Sewczwicz said.
