Johns Creek Revamps Road Information Map

The new Road Information Map tool shows live traffic conditions and road improvement projects throughout Johns Creek.

The city of Johns Creek has launched a new Road Information Map with easy-to-read displays of road improvement locations and live traffic conditions.

The map is updated at least once a day, but more often in the case of severe weather, said Johns Creek GIS Manager Nick O'Day.

"We could easily update the Map twenty or more times a day (and have on a few occasions), to keep our citizens informed as much as possible," he said.

The Road Information Map was originally developed as the Road Work map back in 2010 by Johns Creek GIS. The previous version was designed to show only locations where road improvement projects were happening and to give the public a brief description of these projects.

Now, the map displays live traffic conditions (provided via a Google service and basemap) and traffic camera images (provided through the city's and Georgia Department of Transportation's traffic cameras) along with the road improvement projects as it always has (broken into different icon types: general road work projects, lane closed, road closed, icy roadway, and more).

Since April 2013, the Road Work map had been accessed over 5,000 times and O'Day predicts much more usage with the new Road Information Map. The city's success with both maps has drawn interest from other cities.

O'Day said the Alpharetta's GIS/Databased Administration staff helped the city program the new version of the map.

He added that other cities in north Fulton and DeKalb County have expressed interest in integrating in the same way that Alpharetta has.
