City Discusses 'Traffic Calming' Devices

Public Works Department offers possible solutions for traffic speeding through neighborhoods.

The on July 9 listened to Public Works Department's suggestions on slowing traffic on neighborhood roads.

Director Tom Black said that his department receives numerous complaints from citizens about vehicles speeding through neighborhoods. However, the department is limited on what it can do besides police enforcement, education through HOAs and minor stripping and signing changes.Β 

Therefore, city staff researched how jurisdictions throughout the country deal with such problems, and have offered up a "traffic toolbox" for the council to possibly take action on at a later date.

Traffic tools in the proposal include measures that require no physical changes to the roadway, such as targeted police enforcement, radar trailers, speed feedback signs, striping, signage and highly visible crosswalks. Measures in the proposal that do require roadway work include traffic islands and circles, lane chokers and textured pavement.
