City Council: Raff Sworn In, Zoning Updates

Brad Raffensperger takes oath of office; RaceTrac zoning deferred to Jan. 30.

Newly elected Post 2 Council Member was sworn in Monday at in front of a standing-room-only crowd.

, who replaced the outgoing , won a Dec. 6 run-off against Steve Broadbent after neither garnered a majority in the November election that also included opponent Swapna Bhave.

Raffensperger took the oath of office in front of hefty crowds gathered to hear two zoning cases.

request to allow an addition to an existing church building, a new church building and a curb cut onto Brumbelow road was passed unanimously. Church members showed up in force to rebut concerns that the measure would increase traffic in the area.

Meanwhile, opponents who showed up to protest a rezoning that would allow a RaceTrac gas station at Medlock Bridge and Parsons will have to wait until Jan. 30 after representatives for the business requested a deferral that also passed unanimously.

In other business, the council approved both a rezoning request by Headstart Montessari at Johns Bridge and Addison Way to allow for an outdoor play area and a lease for a police substation in the Old Alabama Square shopping plaza.
