A man was struck and killed by a Norfolk Southern freight train Monday afternoon. The accident occurred on the 6900 block of Buford Highway in nearby Peachtree Corners.
Cpl. Jake Smith, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Police Department said the train was traveling northeast at about 35 mph when the man was hit.
"We don't know if it was intentional or not," said Smith who said the conductor had seen the man well before the collision and had sounded his horn but the man did not respond.
"The conductor saw him and blew his horn," said Smith. A witness said the man may have possibly been wearing head phones and did not hear the train's whistle.
Smith said the man appears to be a light-skinned black or possibly Hispanic in his 30s or 40s.
Smith said the body had not yet been identified. He said the medical examiner would look for identification on the body and conduct an autopsy to confirm the cause of death.
