Fulton Schools Name New Police Chief

Felipe Usury is a 21-year law enforcement veteran.

Felipe Usury, a 21-year law enforcement veteran, has been named the Fulton County School System’s Chief of Police.

Usury, who has spent 13 years on the school system’s police force, first as an officer and later as sergeant, lieutenant and captain, will lead a department of more than 60 certified police officers and support staff. Before coming to Fulton County Schools, he served as an officer for eight years with the Cobb County Police Department and is a former Marine Corps reservist.

“Chief Usury has kept our students and schools safe for more than a decade, and I’m pleased to offer him the position as our chief of police,” said Superintendent Robert Avossa. “As a veteran of our police force and a proven leader, he has earned the respect of his fellow officers and our school leaders.”

In addition to being certified by the Police Officer Standards and Training Council, which oversees law enforcement certification, Usury holds a bachelor’s degree in criminology from Saint Leo University and a master’s degree in public administration from Troy State University. He also has received specialized law enforcement certifications that include field training officer, police supervisory, uniform crime reporting and police instructor certifications.

Created in 1989, the Fulton County Schools Police Department provides safety support and response to schools. Commonly called school resource officers, or SROs, the officers have unique training that enables them to work with students and manage special situations affecting schools.
