RUMC Job Networking - Well Worth Your Time

Job-seeking networks offer great information and support to you if you're in the job market. RUMC offers one of the best programs around! Excellent presenters and up-to-date information. Check it out!

Hi there,

On Monday, June 27, I attended a job networking meeting at Roswell United Methodist Church (RUMC). The group meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month, starting at 5:45 p.m. Attendance was really heavy that evening, numbering about 200+.

The RUMC job networking program is outstanding in its comprehensive program and support for job seekers. Attendees network at tables of eight to 10 and listen to a dinner presentation during a light pasta meal. Dinner is free, but a $3 donation is requested. Following dinner, participants disperse to a variety of short workshops on resume writing, small business development, interviewing, networking, and the like. The one that I attended on resume writing was really well done. Presenter Tim Morrison reviewed best practices for developing a standout resume.

For the program on the 27th, after about 45 minutes of workshops, participants returned to the main auditorium to be introduced to 11 speakers on a variety of topics, each speaker bringing a new perspective on job search techniques. Attendees could choose three 20-minute presentations over the course of an hour. This was a departure from the normal single-speaker presentation to the entire group. From what I witnessed, the entire evening presented about one month’s worth of outplacement training in about three and half hours—a lot to digest, but extremely comprehensive. The good news is that you can keep going back for refreshers.

My favorite was Jay Litton’s WoW! Presentation, which focuses on an innovative PPQ (prepared, passion, and qualified) approach to interviewing. Jay is a corporate hiring manager with 14 years’ experience. He and his corps of RUMC volunteers were instrumental in starting this exceptional job networking program. The WoW! Presentation is usually more than an hour. However, in 20 minutes or so, Jay was able to give a small taste of his approach to making a powerful impression at an interview. All of us who were in attendance actually left his program saying, “Wow!”
