Emory Johns Creek Hospital Offers Patients Minimally Invasive Surgery Options

Robotic surgery can mean less pain, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times for patients.

Patients who need certain types of gynecological or bariatric surgery now have a minimally invasive option, thanks to the new daVinci® Surgical System now being used by several physicians at Emory Johns Creek Hospital. The new system uses the latest in technology to allow specially trained surgeons to perform complex procedures through just a few tiny incisions. Though often called a “robot,” the daVinci cannot act on its own. The surgery is performed entirely by the physician.

“The daVinci Surgical System is one more example of the state-of-the-art technology offered by Emory Johns Creek Hospital,” said Stephen Salmieri, DO, board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist at Emory Johns Creek Hospital. “With this offering added to our already high-quality cancer center, bariatric center, women’s health, cardiac and nursing programs, patients have a top-notch, comprehensive medical team right here in their neighborhood.”

Dr. Salmieri has performed more than 600 surgeries using the daVinci system, and said the system makes a great surgeon even better. The doctor controls the daVinci system, translating his or her hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments inside the body. It features three-dimensional, high-definition viewing of anatomy, offering greater depth perception and lateral viewing than can be obtained with the naked eye.
