Davenport Wins Runoff for Post 3 City Council Seat

Cori Davenport captured 66 percent of the vote to win over incumbent Karen Richardson.

Update: Dec. 4, 2013, 8:30 a.m.

In the final step of an often contentious election, newcomer Cori Davenport secured the Post 3 City Council seat in the Dec. 3 runoff election against incumbent Karen Richardson.

Davenport collected 66 percent of the vote (1,926 votes) to Richardson's 34 percent (985 votes).

"The people spoke. I'm overwhelmed and humbled by the incredible support of the citizens of Johns Creek," said Davenport. "I look forward to serving the community. And we have a clear mandate: to bring positive change to our city."

Patch also caught up with a jubilant Rhonda Wilson who was at Rivermont Golf & Country Club where some 125 of Davenport's supporters had gathered to wait for the election results.

"The voters made their decision," said Wilson who said she and a number of supporters had spent the afternoon waiving signs in the rain.

Richardson, disappointed over her loss had this to say in an email:

"All I can say is that it has been an honor to serve the citizens of Johns Creek. I am tremendously proud of what has been accomplished in 7 short years.  And this city has the best staff in the State of Georgia.  They are the finest people with whom I have ever had the privilege of working.

I hope for both Lenny and Cori that they learn quickly and take seriously the responsibility of serving 80,000 citizens who are counting on them to make intelligent, reasoned, decisions independent of personal or political agendas."

Wayne Carrel, another Davenport supporter, who was weary of watching a dysfunctional City Council operate for months said "I'm glad it's over, glad it happened the way it did."

Wilson also expressed relief and hope that with two new City Council members the city will begin functioning again.
